Indian People speak of beginnings in which there were only spirits. One day the Creator called them all together, for it was time to fill the world with animals, trees, rocks, and water. "Choose what you want to be," the Creator said. Oregos, the helpful one, chose to be a rock on the north bank of the Klamath River so she could guard the salmon that the people dried and smoked for winter food. Every fall, Oregos summons the salmon back from the ocean. She tells the salmon when the rains will swell the waters enough to let them return easily to their spawning ground up-river, and warns them of dangers along the way.
