The generation gap began at the turn of the century for Indian women of Northern California. The "III" tattoo on the chin was once a desired mark of beauty and nobility as worn by the older woman pictured on the right. It no longer held an attraction for the young woman of the new 20th century. In the 1990's there have been several women of local tribes who have returned to this tradition, having the "III" tattooed on their chin.
