Happy Camp Area 1910



The turn of the century brought Western dress and the horse to Indian women. For those living in such isolated areas the horse became a most convenient way to travel the trails upriver to Yreka or over the mountain to Crescent City. This Karuk Woman could look forward to a long day on the road before reaching her destination on horseback. Prior to this she would have walked.
