Miscellaneous Assistance

  • Many of NCIDC's services and activities are planned and tracked as part of a specific grant or contract in partnership with various state, federal, and non-profit foundation agencies. NCIDC also receives donations of time and money by many local and regional friends and sponsors for specific activities such as the annual Inter-Tribal Gathering and Honoring the Elders Dinner.

However there are also many activities and services that NCIDC provides because the need is there, without a specific grant or contract to fund them. These are situations where NCIDC must be sensitive to the current needs of Indian Country, and move quickly to adapt services and assist the Indian tribes, communities, and individuals looking to them for help. NCIDC's quick response to the emergency situation during the evacuation of eastern Humboldt County during prior years fires in Trinity and Humboldt counties is one such example of this unplanned assistance.

During past fire emergencies, Indian elders, children, and disabled citizens have found themselves in a dire health emergency with air quality so bad that evacuations were ordered by medical providers. NCIDC moved quickly to obtain the food, shelter, transportation, and other service needed by these individuals, both through NCIDC's services as well as in coordination with other county and non-profit agencies. NCIDC committed all available funding and services in order to facilitate the quickest possible response, and only then, once an appropriate response had been developed and services put into place, did NCIDC begin the process of acquiring additional funding for this emergency..

Other miscellaneous activities are annual traditions at NCIDC, such as the holiday season food box distribution program. In this program, over 550 families are assisted with substantial holiday food boxes containing over $50 worth of appropriate holiday food such as canned hams, fresh fruit, staples and other items. These boxes are distributed throughout the four county primary service area, and member organizations assist with the local distribution in each of their respective communities.

In all three offices of NCIDC computers are made available for community use. Assistance is provided to help log on to the inter net, create resumes, prepare letters or for other necessary uses.

The NCIDC maintains a presence on the World Wide Web (www.ncidc.org). The site disseminates important information about NCIDC to clients, subcontractors and the general public. Additionally, this web site provides an e-commerce option for the NCIDC Gift Shop where customers and collectors can view various items of interest.

Individuals who are looking for gainful employment can use the services of NCIDC to assist them. Job listings, resume writing, practice interviews, recommendations and referrals are all available to serve our clients.

Program clients are often times in need of services that are not directly obtainable from NCIDC. In these instances, clients are given referrals to other community agencies that may be able to meet their needs. NCIDC works closely with other programs to develop a broad network of resources for the American Indian community.

The use of offices, meeting and large gathering space has been made available to various programs and groups from the Native community. Youth groups, parent committees, school task forces, flu shot clinics, tribal functions have been all activities and meetings hosted by NCIDC in the past year.

Financial support, and in-kind contributions of employee time, materials and equipment use have also been donated to many community efforts each year. A few of these special projects include youth conferences, basketball and softball tournaments, cultural nights, and support for other non-profit events.
