About the Karuk Language and the Karuk Language Restoration Committee (KLRC)
The Karuk language is spoken fluently by less than a dozen people. It is the intent of the Karuk Tribe to revitalize and document the language for future generations of Karuk people.
The Karuk Language Program is currently operating with a three-year grant from the Administration for Native Americans (ANA). We are designing and developing a distance education language class. As of December 2006, we are in the design stage and plan to field test the first class in late spring 2007.
The purpose of the Karuk Language Restoration Committee (KLRC) is to work in conjunction with Karuk Tribal members, Karuk Language Program staff and the Karuk Tribal Council, to assist in the documentation and revitalization of the Karuk Language. This committee will provide direction in the development of curriculum, policy and teaching strategies to ensure that the Karuk Language is taught to all tribal members interested in preserving this part of their heritage.
The Karuk Language Restoration Committee has been the driving force behind many community language classes and the development of language learning materials such as CDs, dictionaries and videos. The KLRC also supports the work of language learners with fluent speakers.
The family of Auntie Violet Super has asked that in lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Karuk Tribe’s Karuk Language Restoration Committee. Please make checks out to KTOC, and in the memo field, please write “donation to the Karuk Language Restoration Committee.” Donations may be sent to Karuk Tribe, PO Box 1016, Happy Camp, CA 96039.
